No. 16 – “How Clear is the Silence” 15/11/15

A bath with no bubbles, a night with no stars,
A world with no laughter, a street with no cars.

How clear is the silence, echoes alone,
Ruffle the treetops, and lead us all home.

A night with no sleeping, a dog with no friend,
A house with no key and long stairs with no end.

How clear is the silence, echoes alone,
Ruffle the treetops, and lead us all home.

A bed with no sheets, a cat with no claws,
A boat with no sails, a town with no laws.

How clear is the silence, echoes alone,
Ruffle the treetops, and lead us all home.

  1. Zoe, The form / repetition is highly effective. That last line about a town with no laws delivers a big punch by standing out from the rest. The other ‘no’s are incidental, whereas, that one is intentional. This is why I find the form so compelling – I see this as an anti-chaos statement.

    • Thanks for that Jilly, I wrote this one a while ago so when I posted it yesterday I was actually rethinking what I had meant by it 😉 but yes I guess it is about the order we have and what would happen if it disappeared. All the things we view as normal, but are actually very important. Thank you for your thoughtful comment! I am so glad you enjoyed this poem.
